A bonnet is worn as a head cap, under a scarf and headscarf. In addition to extra coverage, it also provides a base to pin your scarf and/or headscarf to so that the scarf/headscarf stays in place around the head. Furthermore, wearing a bonnet makes it more comfortable to wear a scarf, etc. This is because a bonnet is made of a cotton fabric and it breathes better than polyester.
